Xiomara Castro has approved the 2023 budget proposal for L392bn (US$15.59bn), up 8% on the current L360bn. According to the government, social investment in areas such as education, health and the poverty reduction strategy will absorb some L71bn. The government points out that the current L360bn budget includes an additional L52bn approved in April, in addition to the initial 2022 budget approved last year by the previous Partido Nacional (PN) government led by former president
Juan Orlando Hernández (2014-2022). The budget proposal now goes to the 128-member unicameral legislature for approval.
