*US Under Secretary for Economic Growth, Energy, and the Environment Jose Fernandez has paid a visit to Costa Rica and Panama to discuss collaboration and further strengthen the US’s strategic economic partnership with Alliance for Development in Democracy (ADD) countries on supply chains, including new opportunities for investment in more resilient and secure technologies. The ADD, which also includes the Dominican Republic and, more recently, Ecuador, launched in September 2021 to promote democratic strengthening and economic growth through the tightening of the countries’ commercial, demographic, and cultural ties. In Costa Rica, Fernandez met President Rodrigo Chaves to discuss shared regional objectives for promoting trade and investment, supporting the development of 5G telecommunications infrastructure, and protecting oceans through marine governance and transparency with cooperation on the Eastern Tropical Pacific Marine Corridor (CMAR), an intergovernmental ocean conservation initiative. In Panama, he met senior officials including Foreign Minister Erika Mouynes to discuss US investment in supply chains, renewable energy, ocean conservation and other issues of interest as well as meeting with private sector leaders to identify opportunities to boost collaboration in telecommunications, the pharmaceutical sector and energy.
