Ecuador's Lasso suffers major setback to oil and mining plans

Little over a year after he took office with a pledge to galvanise Ecuador’s economy by kickstarting an oil and mining boom, President Guillermo Lasso’s plans for these sectors appear to lie in tatters. On 9 September the government reached an agreement with the indigenous organisation Confederación de Nacionalidades Indígenas del Ecuador (Conaie) announcing a moratorium on oil extraction at 15 different sites and a temporary ban on the granting of new mining concessions. Indicating a change of strategy in response to the limitations imposed by Conaie and an obstructive congress, the government is now preparing to submit some of its more sweeping reform proposals to a popular referendum.
