ARGENTINA: Massa’s ‘success’ overshadowed by surge in inflation

President Alberto Fernández met Sergio Massa on 13 September upon his economy minister’s return from a week-long trip to the US to drum up investment to boost dwindling international reserves and review Argentina’s debt deal with the International Monetary Fund (IMF). On the same day, Fernández released a video to mark 1,000 days in office during which he said his government had not achieved everything it set out to do but would push to meet its goals in what remained of his mandate. Day 1,001 served notice of the scale of the task ahead and just why ordinary Argentines will have little confidence in these goals being realised - the national statistics institute (Indec) released data showing inflation soaring to a 30-year high and advancing inexorably towards triple digits.
