In brief: Peru’s transport and communications minister impeached

* Peru’s congress has voted to impeach the transport and communications minister, Geiner Alvarado, after he was accused by a cross-party group of legislators of involvement in a criminal organisation allegedly headed by President Pedro Castillo. The accusations relate to Alvarado’s tenure as housing, construction and sanitation minister between February and August this year. The impeachment motion accused Alvarado of “having committed suspected illegal acts relating to fraudulent public tenders,” and of awarding “enormous sums of money to companies that did not meet legal requirements.” He was impeached with 94 votes in favour, 14 against, and eight abstentions. Following the vote, the attorney general’s office urged the Peruvian judiciary to impose a travel ban on Alvarado, while it conducts an investigation.
