On 21 September, leftist Latin American political and cultural figures published an open letter asking candidate Ciro Gomes, of the left-wing Partido Democrático Trabalhista (PDT), to drop out of Brazil’s 2 October presidential race and support former president Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (2003-2011), the current frontrunner.
