Antony Blinken said the new aid would bring the total humanitarian assistance for the region since Fiscal Year 2018 to more than US$594m. He added that the assistance would support “
the humanitarian and protection needs of refugees, asylum seekers, internally displaced persons, stateless persons, and vulnerable migrants”. Blinken met with Mexico’s President
Andrés Manuel López Obrador while in Mexico for a US-Mexico High-Level Economic Dialogue (HLED) on 12 September. Joint efforts to address irregular migration in the region formed part of their discussions.
