In brief: US announces aid for Mexico

* The US has announced it is providing almost US$200m to Mexico, along with countries in Central America, in humanitarian assistance through international organisations and NGO partners in the region. In a US State Department press release, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken said the new aid would bring the total humanitarian assistance for the region since Fiscal Year 2018 to more than US$594m. He added that the assistance would support “the humanitarian and protection needs of refugees, asylum seekers, internally displaced persons, stateless persons, and vulnerable migrants”. Blinken met with Mexico’s President Andrés Manuel López Obrador while in Mexico for a US-Mexico High-Level Economic Dialogue (HLED) on 12 September. Joint efforts to address irregular migration in the region formed part of their discussions.
