* Peru’s government, led by President
Pedro Castillo, has agreed to launch a dialogue process to resolve a dispute over the planned expansion of the Antapaccay copper mine in the southern region of Cusco. Since 23 August, residents from 11 indigenous communities in Espinar province have intermittently blocked access roads to Antapaccay, which is owned by Glencore, to protest the mine’s planned expansion and demand increased compensation for environmental degradation. Following the agreement signed yesterday between community leaders and government officials, a series of dialogue sessions will take place from 26 September. These will feature the participation of representatives from a range of government departments, including the energy and mining ministry, the economy and finance ministry, and the justice ministry.
