Ecuador’s wave of violence hits prosecutors

Yet another public prosecutor was gunned down by hitmen in Ecuador this week, the third to suffer the fate this year. Indeed, all of the murders have taken place since the end of May, raising some concern that the spate of attacks has in some way been inspired by the assassination of Paraguay’s special prosecutor against organised crime, Marcelo Pecci, who was shot dead by hitmen on a beach while on honeymoon in Colombia on 10 May [WR-22-19].
