In brief: Colombia’s Petro proposes redistributive land purchases

* Colombia’s President Gustavo Petro has proposed buying 5m hectares (ha) of land from private owners at market rates, to then sell at subsidised prices as part of his government’s agrarian reform. He said that the purchased land would be sold “at reduced cost to peasant farmers and small and medium-sized businesses with one fundamental objective – to create a foundation of social justice in the agrarian world.” This latest proposal came the day after the government launched its agrarian reform with the announcement that it would award titles for 681,372 ha of land to peasant farmers and indigenous and afro-Colombians by November.
