In brief: MEPs look to accelerate EU-Mercosur deal

* Jordi Cañas, chair of the European Parliament’s delegation for relations with the Southern Common Market (Mercosur), has said he hopes that the process of ratifying the 2019 trade agreement between the European Union (EU) and Mercosur, will begin “as soon as possible”. Cañas was speaking after the conclusion of a three-day visit by European Parliament members (MEPs) to Paraguay. “It is going to be that instrument we need to strengthen and reinforce our relations, not only commercial but also political and cooperative,” said Cañas, adding that the agreement “will be the beginning” of what both blocs can do in the face of global challenges. The trade deal between the EU and Mercosur, which comprises Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay and Uruguay, was signed in 2019 after two decades of negotiations, but ratification has been delayed due to the concerns of several EU governments about the Bolsonaro administration’s environmental record.
