Harris meets Caribbean leaders

Caribbean: On 15 September US Vice President Kamala Harris met Suriname’s President Chan Santokhi; Prime Minister Mia Mottley of Barbados; Guyana’s President Irfaan Ali; Trinidad & Tobago’s Prime Minister Keith Rowley; and President Luis Abinader of the Dominican Republic – to review the progress they have made with regard to three high level action committees established at the US-hosted Summit of the Americas in June 2022. According to a US official press release, the US administration is partnering with Caribbean nations to promote energy security, access to finance, and food security in the Caribbean. Key actions to promote energy security include plans by the US government to send a multi-agency delegation to the region in October 2022 to develop technical assistance packages and prepare viable energy projects that are attractive to investors, as well as an energy procurement orientation visit for Caribbean officials in October 2022 to be hosted by the US Trade and Development Agency (USTDA). Meanwhile, actions regarding food security include the US government’s provision of US$28m in assistance to address urgent food security needs in the Caribbean.
