In brief: Peru’s gov’t plans changes to mining policy

* Peru’s economy and finance (MEF) minister, Kurt Burneo, has said that the government led by President Pedro Castillo will make changes to the country’s mining policy in an effort to boost investment in mining and in the communities surrounding mines. “Peruvian mining is highly competitive, but it could be more so with better public-private cooperation,” he said. According to an MEF statement, the government will make “regulatory improvements”, as well as assigning greater funding to regulatory bodies including that tasked with the conservation of protected areas (Sernanp), the national water authority (ANA), and the licencing authority for sustainable investments (Senace). Secondly, the government will “consider incentives for mining investment”, including the extension of tax benefits. Finally, Burneo said that the government will move to “close social divides” in mining areas by expanding public works projects funded by mining royalties and drawing up a list of priority infrastructure projects in mining areas.
