PERU: Voter apathy prevails ahead of elections

Such is the level of disillusionment with the political class in Peru that as Peruvians prepare to go to the polls on 2 October for regional and municipal elections, as many as two-thirds of voters feel they have no political leader that represents them. While the survey was focused on national leaders, the findings reflect a breakdown in trust in political parties and could suggest a growing loss of faith in democracy, providing fertile ground for an authoritarian populist. It has reached the point now where it would be more surprising if a national party performed strongly in the regional elections than if local populist leaders espousing anti-system views triumphed.
