BRAZIL: Tensions rise ahead of election

As Brazil braces for what may be one of the most turbulent elections in its recent history, on 2 October, two intertwined questions loom on the country’s political horizon. First, whether President Jair Bolsonaro would hand over power smoothly should he lose the election to leftist former president Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (2003-2011), who is leading the opinion polls with an advantage of between 10 and 17 percentage points. Second, whether the election process proceeds peacefully despite the growing political tensions in the country.
