CHILE: Hackers cause military headache

The defence minister, Maya Fernández, was forced to cut short a visit to the US and speed back to Santiago on 22 September to lead a crisis-response effort after a group of hackers broke into the server of the joint command of the armed forces and leaked more than 400,000 emails containing sensitive information to the press. Fernández was part of the delegation accompanying President Gabriel Boric to the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA). The episode has placed more strain on relations between the armed forces and the Boric administration as it coincided with a further five retired generals being charged with misappropriation of public funds in the deepening ‘milicogate’ scandal.
