MEXICO: Justice remains distant on Ayotzinapa anniversary

Eight years have passed since 43 students from the rural Ayotzinapa teacher training college disappeared after passing through Iguala city, Guerrero state, on their way to a protest in Mexico City (CDMX) on 26 September 2014. This anniversary comes at a particularly sensitive juncture in the investigation into the incident. Progress stemming from a report released by the Ayotzinapa truth and justice commission (Covaj) in August has been marred by setbacks - the most significant being the resignation of the lead prosecutor in the case, Omar Gómez Trejo. This has led to mounting frustration as the glimmer of hope sparked by the report begins to fade.
