PANAMA: Former presidents charged in major corruption case

Two former presidents, Juan Carlos Varela (Partido Panameñista, 2014-2019) and Ricardo Martinelli (Cambio Democrático, 2009-2014), are among nearly 50 people recently charged by Panama’s attorney general’s office in relation to the high-profile corruption scandal involving Brazilian construction and engineering firm Odebrecht – one of the biggest corruption schemes in the country’s history. The case is serving as the latest test of the pledge by President Laurentino Cortizo of the Partido Revolucionario Democrático (PRD) to address corruption, a complaint which featured heavily in the July unrest sparked by spiralling living costs [WR-22-29].
