MEXICO: Debate over pretrial detention intensifies

On 8 September, Mexico’s supreme court (SCJN) withdrew two proposals that had sought to eliminate mandatory pretrial detention. It had become clear that the proposals would not receive the majority of votes needed to pass. However, it appeared these objections were on technical, rather than ideological grounds, and the justices who made the proposals were clear that they would continue to pursue the matter. The debate around the issue is stoking tensions between the SCJN and President Andrés Manuel López Obrador.
