Raging inferno causes electoral furore in Paraguay

“As voracious as it was suspicious.” This subheading in Paraguay’s national daily ABC Color accompanied a piece describing a conflagration at the headquarters of the supreme electoral tribunal (TSJE) in the capital Asunción on 29 September. As the fire raged and columns of black smoke poured into the sky, opposition politicians also expressed their conviction that something untoward was going on after the president of the TSJE, Jaime Bestard, of the Honor Colorado faction of the ruling Asociación Nacional Republicana-Partido Colorado (ANR-PC), suggested that it might no longer be possible to stage all of the upcoming party primary elections simultaneously.
