In brief: Honduran banana producers warn of losses

*Local organisations representing banana producers in Honduras such as Asociación de Productores de Banano Nacionales de Honduras (Aprobanah) are warning of the impact of the recent rains caused by Storm Julia which left at least 28 people dead across Central America after drenching the region in recent days with torrential rains that triggered floods and landslides. One local banana producer, Sandra Deras, told the media that producers are expecting losses of L800m (US$32.36m) as a result of reduced exports as recent rains have destroyed crops. The latest update (11 October) by the United Nations (UN) Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) says that while assessments are still in their early stages, it is apparent that Julia’s impacts have been quite severe, especially in northern Central America, “with reports of significant damage to housing and related displacement, agriculture as well as health and educational infrastructure.” In Honduras, some 103,960 people have been affected by the passage of Julia, bringing the total population affected by the rainy season to over 188,300 people. The latest report by the Honduran permanent contingency commission (Copeco), a government entity created to coordinate public and private disaster relief efforts, estimates that 21 people have died in Honduras, 3,373 homes have been damaged and 15 out of 18 departments affected as a result of storms and heavy rains between 1 September and 10 October 2022.
