VENEZUELA: UN maintains pressure over human rights

The United Nations Human Rights Council (HRC) voted on 7 October to extend the mandate of the International Fact-Finding Mission on Venezuela (FFMV) for a further two years. The FFMV’s extension was welcomed by human rights organisations and was one of three blows suffered by President Nicolás Maduro’s administration in the past week, which also saw Venezuela lose its much-criticised seat on the HRC and the narrow failure of an international effort to remove opposition leader Juan Guaidó’s delegate from the Organization of American States (OAS).
