MEXICO: Venezuelan migrant programme sparks criticism

The US and Mexican governments have launched a new migration programme aimed at reducing the rising number of Venezuelan migrants arriving at their shared border. The programme provides a new legal pathway for 24,000 Venezuelan migrants to seek asylum in the US. However, all Venezuelans attempting to enter the US irregularly will be immediately expelled to Mexico, and unable to apply for refuge. Rights groups have criticised the programme, which they say fails to address the scale of the problem and is likely to place further strain on already overcrowded Mexican border towns.
