PANAMA: Gov’t warns of migration surge

In late September Panama’s public security minister, Juan Manuel Pino, said that the number of irregular migrants to have entered Panama via the Darién Gap, a dense jungle bordering Colombia, had already exceeded the figure registered for the whole of 2021. This once again underlines a major security and humanitarian issue for the Panamanian government, its neighbours, as well as the US government, whose Secretary of State Antony Blinken visited Panama in April where he met President Laurentino Cortizo, signed a bilateral accord on migration, and co-hosted a ministerial meeting on migration [SSR-22-05].
