BOLIVIA: ‘Indefinite’ strike gets underway in Santa Cruz

An ‘indefinite’ strike was launched by the political opposition in Bolivia’s eastern department of Santa Cruz on 22 October, as part of efforts to force President Luis Arce’s government into a U-turn over its postponement of a national census. Initial attempts at dialogue have gone nowhere, and protest organisers have warned that the unrest will continue until Arce abandons what they claim is an attempt to load the dice ahead of the 2025 general election [WR-22-42]. Making matters worse for the Arce administration, thousands of gold miners brought La Paz to a standstill from 24-25 October, as the government began talks aimed at raising taxes on the sector.
