MEXICO: Debate continues around electoral reform
The Council of Europe’s Venice Commission, an advisory committee composed of independent experts in constitutional law, has issued warnings against proposed changes to Mexico’s electoral system. The warnings relate to a draft constitutional reform that President Andrés Manuel López Obrador sent to the lower chamber of congress in April. The commission’s report comes as the process of deciding the final terms of an electoral reform initiative gets underway, following open congressional sessions on the issue in July and August [WR-22-30].
