US expresses support for UNSC resolution on Haiti

Haiti: On 21 October, US Assistant Secretary of State for Western Hemisphere Affairs Brian Nichols tweeted that the US “applauds” a United Nations Security Council (UNSC) resolution targeting actors who have “exacerbated Haiti’s security, health and humanitarian crisis”. Drafted by the US and Mexico and approved by the UNSC on 21 October, Resolution 2653 authorises a sanctions package for Haiti to address gang violence – targeting gang leaders and those who finance them, it establishes a committee responsible for designating the individuals and entities to be sanctioned. Sanctions include an assets freeze, travel ban and arms embargo against those engaging in or supporting criminal activity and violence involving armed groups and criminal networks. Designated activity includes recruiting children, carrying out kidnappings, trafficking, murder, and sexual and gender-based violence. The resolution also designates the obstruction of humanitarian assistance to and inside Haiti, and any attacks on personnel or premises of UN missions and operations.
