HAITI: Violence overshadows voodoo festival

There was a prevailing sense of sorrow on 1 and 2 November as Haitians celebrated the Fèt Gede, the voodoo festival of the dead, against the backdrop of soaring violence and insecurity. Just days beforehand a prominent opposition politician, Eric Jean Baptiste, was gunned down by members of one of the armed gangs controlling vast swathes of the capital Port-au-Prince, while yet another journalist was murdered.
