Environmental activist killing sparks concerns in Mexico

On 28 October, the Office of the United Nations (UN) High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) in Mexico condemned the killing of Filogonio Martínez Merino, a local activist in the community of Paso de la Reina, Oaxaca state, who had led resistance to the building of new hydroelectric projects in the area. He is one of a growing number of environmental and land rights activists to have lost their lives in Mexico.
