Changes in Mexico’s economy ministry reflect nationalist tilt

During a morning press conference on 6 October, Mexico’s President Andrés Manuel López Obrador announced that Tatiana Clouthier was resigning as economy minister. In her resignation letter, Clouthier said that she had first talked to López Obrador about her exit from the cabinet in late July, and again in September. These timings suggest that her departure may be related to the consultations that the US and Canada requested over Mexico’s energy policy, which they claim violates the US-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA) on regional trade, and which could result in trade sanctions against Mexico if unresolved.
