URUGUAY: Lacalle Pou seals Japan trade breakthrough

It was mission accomplished for Uruguay’s President Luis Alberto Lacalle Pou when he visited Japan at the tail end of October, accompanied by senior cabinet ministers to mark the centenary of bilateral relations. Lacalle Pou was intent on expanding trade, attracting foreign investment, and promoting exports, with one product in particular at the top of his list of priorities: beef tongue. Some 21 years after exports were halted after an outbreak of foot-and-mouth disease struck Uruguayan livestock, Japan will resume imports of beef tongue after lifting restrictions within a week of Lacalle Pou’s visit. This should lift total Uruguayan exports to Japan by over 25%.
