GUATEMALA: Another high-profile judge quits and leaves

A judge in one of Guatemala’s high-risk courts, Miguel Angel Gálvez, has become the latest justice official identified with the fight against corruption to resign and flee the country. As with other colleagues such as Erika Aifán, who quit in March, Gálvez faced death threats and intimidation, as well as the prospect of judicial action from local far-right lobby group, Fundación Contra el Terrorismo (FCT). Well-known for his work on cases addressing civil-war (1960-1996) impunity and other high-profile corruption cases, Gálvez’s plight has drawn attention from the foreign community, already alarmed about the backsliding in anti-corruption efforts under the government led by President Alejandro Giammattei, on whose watch some 28 independent judges and prosecutors have fled the country.
