Boric makes gesture to Mapuche in Chile’s conflict-torn south

Chile’s President Gabriel Boric sought to make up for lost time during his first visit since taking office in March to the southern region of La Araucanía on 10 and 11 November. Boric promised to upend the decades-long failed strategy vis-à-vis the longstanding conflict with the Mapuche during his election campaign but after a series of early reversals he reverted to much the same policy as his predecessors, even reinstating in May the state of exception in La Araucanía and two provinces in neighbouring Biobío that he had criticised while in opposition. During his visit, however, Boric promised to establish a special commission to proceed with the restitution of land to Mapuche communities.
