In brief: Chile’s Boric works to boost relations at Apec summit
*Chile’s President Gabriel Boric has signed a joint declaration with Canada’s Prime Minister Justin Trudeau to commit to improving the dispute resolution mechanism contained in the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP) trade deal. Chile’s senate voted to approve the CPTPP on 11 October. However, Boric has raised concerns over the agreement’s dispute resolution mechanism and has attempted to work with fellow CPTPP members to modify the mechanism before ratifying the agreement. Boric met with Trudeau at the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation Forum (Apec) summit in Bangkok, Thailand, where he also met with Fumio Kishida, the prime minister of fellow CPTPP member Japan to discuss bilateral cooperation and investment agreements. Today (18 November), Boric will meet China’s President Xi Jinping for the first time. China is Chile’s top trading partner. During the summit, Boric has stressed that he is keen to strengthen links with the economies of the Asia Pacific.
