* Bolivia’s economy and finance minister, Marcelo Montenegro, has announced that the government led by President Luis Arce is expecting GDP growth of 4.86% in 2023, down from its forecast of 5.1% growth in 2022. Montenegro also said that the government is planning to spend US$4.0bn on public investment next year, down by over US$1bn on the US$5.01bn that was earmarked for this year. The diminished forecast comes as the ongoing civil unrest in Santa Cruz department continues to weigh heavily on Bolivia’s economic performance, and particularly on its agricultural sector. The protests, which have now been running for 31 days, are showing no sign of easing and now risks spreading to other parts of the country.
