In brief: Lorry drivers block roads in northern Chile

* The Chilean lorry drivers’ union Confederación Gremial de Transportistas Fuerza del Norte (CGTFN) has launched an indefinite strike in the north of the country, in protest at high fuel prices and insecurity faced by lorry drivers. Drivers belonging to the CGTFN caused major disruption by blocking highways between Arica region, on the northern border with Peru, and the Santiago metropolitan region. CGTFN president Cristian Sandoval said that the union approached President Gabriel Boric’s government with its concerns on 3 November, but that no action was taken to alleviate the pressures on drivers. However, the president of Chile’s umbrella transport union, Confederación Nacional del Transporte de Carga Terrestre de Chile (CNTC), Sergio Pérez, yesterday said that his union had met with finance minister Mario Marcel and that an agreement with the government was likely to be reached in the coming days.
