* Ecuador’s interior ministry has announced that the government will not be proceeding with plans to forgive personal loans of between US$3,000 and US$10,000 from state bank Banecuador, rowing back on an agreement it reached with the indigenous organisation Confederación de Nacionalidades Indígenas del Ecuador (Conaie) in June to end major anti-government protests. An interior ministry statement said that the debt forgiveness “is not financially viable,” although it emphasised that other agreements reached with Conaie on personal debt restructuring would be upheld. The U-turn by President Guillermo Lasso’s government will increase hostilities with Conaie and other indigenous organisations, peasant associations and trade unions that joined the June protests, increasing the risk of further civil unrest.
