Colombia’s Petro makes major strides on campaign pledges

In the same week that he marked his first 100 days in office, Colombia’s President Gustavo Petro celebrated major progress on two key pledges in his campaign manifesto. His government took a crucial step forward in its push for ‘total peace’ on 21 November, with the formal launch of peace talks with the Ejército de Liberación Nacional (ELN) guerrilla group. This came four days after congress gave its final approval to the government’s tax reform bill, which will be essential to funding the massive social investment package that Petro has outlined for his four-year term, in part for the purpose of underpinning the peace.
