A high-level delegation from the OAS concluded a three-day visit to Peru this week with the objective of supporting democracy and defusing tensions after meeting all of the principal actors in the political confrontation that has gripped Peru since President Pedro Castillo took office in July 2021. Castillo appealed to the OAS to send a mission in October after accusing the opposition of seeking to unseat him in “a new type of coup”. Congress, by contrast, has been slowly and methodically advancing with constitutional complaints which could lead to the suspension of Castillo, who has sought to stymie its progress by calling votes of confidence in his government.
