*Mexico’s economy minister, Raquel Buenrostro, has been cited by the local and international media as saying that Mexico has offered to extend a deadline to ban imports of genetically modified yellow corn until 2025 as per a presidential decree. President Andrés Manuel López Obrador’s plan to stop the imports by January 2024 has caused much concern in the US in recent weeks. In a strongly worded statement at the end of last month, US Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack said that the proposal would have a “significant impact on the US-Mexico trade relationship” and warned that the US government would take legal action under the US-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA) on regional trade if no solution was reached. However, yesterday Buenrostro was cited by reporters at a news conference as saying that Mexico is drafting a proposal to modify and clarify the presidential decree and that a meeting with US officials to discuss this could take place on 16 December.
