In brief: Chile and EU sign modernised trade agreement

*Chile’s President Gabriel Boric has announced the “successful conclusion” of negotiations for a new bilateral trade agreement with the European Union (EU). Chile and the EU entered an Association Agreement in 2002, which includes a free trade agreement that began in 2003 and has been the subject of modernisation negotiations since 2017. In a joint statement, Boric and the president of the European Commission, Ursula Von der Leyen, said the EU-Chile advanced framework agreement built on “the close political and economic relationship that the EU and Chile have established” and marked “the beginning of a new chapter in bilateral cooperation between the EU and Chile, with our common values at the centre”, which include “a strong commitment to human rights, sustainable trade, gender equality and the fight against climate change.” Chile’s foreign minister, Antonia Urrejola, and undersecretary of international economic relations, José Miguel Ahumada, had led the negotiations with EU representatives including the high representative for foreign affairs, Josep Borrell. The agreement now awaits ratification, with both Chile and the EU stating they hope the process will be “swift”.
