Peru: On 8 December US Assistant Secretary of State for Western Hemisphere Affairs
Brian Nichols tweeted that the US “
welcomes” Peru’s new President
Dina Boluarte and “
hopes to work with her administration to achieve a more democratic, prosperous and safe region”. Boluarte was sworn in by Peru’s congress after
Pedro Castillo was impeached after announcing that he was temporarily dissolving congress, calling fresh elections and reorganising the judiciary. Nichols also said that the US “
supports Boluarte’s call for a national unity government and applauds Peruvians while they unite in support of democracy”. At a press briefing the previous day, US Department of State spokesperson
Ned Price said that the US ambassador to Peru,
Lisa Kenna had “
made very clear that we categorically reject any acts to circumvent or to contradict Peru’s constitutions. We categorically reject any acts that undermine democracy inside of Peru.” He also said that
“former president” Castillo had been removed after congress took
“corrective action”.
