Peru’s President Dina Boluarte announced a 30-day nationwide state of emergency on 14 December in response to fatal protests that erupted in several regions in the south and north of the country over the impeachment of Pedro Castillo by congress after his attempted self-coup last week. Boluarte’s grip on power is tenuous. Any hope of her serving out Castillo’s term, which concludes in July 2026, dissipated as soon as she mentioned the possibility of bringing elections forward in an attempt to defuse tensions as violent clashes between protesters and the national police have so far claimed eight lives.
