MEXICO: Mass prison break prompts blame game

A major breakout from the state prison in Ciudad Juárez took place on the morning of 1 January. As many as 30 inmates are believed to have escaped in the breakout, including members of the local drug trafficking organisation Los Mexicles, from the prison in the northern state of Chihuahua. In the aftermath, federal officials from the ruling left-wing Movimiento Regeneración Nacional (Morena) have placed the blame on the Chihuahua state government, led by the right-wing opposition Partido Acción Nacional (PAN). In turn, the Chihuahua state attorney general’s office (FGE) dismissed the prison director Alejandro Alvarado.
