MEXICO: New supreme court president makes history

Mexico’s supreme court (SCJN) has elected a female president for the first time in its history. On 2 January, justices voted by six votes to five to elect Norma Lucía Piña Hernández to the court’s top job, in what outgoing president Arturo Zaldívar termed a “historic day”. Although leading figures from the ruling left-wing Movimiento Regeneración Nacional (Morena) congratulated Piña, her election marks a shift away from the close alliance that President Andrés Manuel López Obrador shared with her predecessor.
