PARAGUAY: Peña prevails in party primaries

Santiago Peña has moved in to pole position to become Paraguay’s next president when the general election is held on 30 April this year. Peña will be formally proclaimed as the presidential candidate of the ruling Asociación Nacional Republicana-Partido Colorado (ANR-PC) on 10 January after winning last month’s party primary elections. The ANR-PC has held power since 1948 barring a five-year hiatus from 2008-2013. The fact that several parties promptly dropped out of the catch-all opposition Concertación coalition after the victory once again of Efraín Alegre, the candidate of the main faction in the largest opposition party Partido Liberal Radical Auténtico (PLRA) on an underwhelming turnout in concurrent primaries, suggests the dominance of the ANR-PC is likely to continue.
