BOLIVIA: Camacho’s imprisonment threatens new wave of unrest

Luis Fernando Camacho, the right-wing governor of Bolivia’s eastern department of Santa Cruz and one of the most vocal critics of President Luis Arce’s government, was arrested on 28 December after being accused by prosecutors of “terrorism” in relation to the disputed 2019 presidential election. Camacho’s arrest and subsequent sentencing to four months’ preventive detention triggered a storm of protest among the opposition, which argued that it represented another example of the co-optation of the judiciary under the ruling left-wing Movimiento al Socialismo (MAS). With protests demanding Camacho’s release having already run for over a week in Santa Cruz, the government now risks seeing the unrest spread across the country.
