In brief: Argentina and Japan looking to boost trade ties

* Argentina’s President Alberto Fernández has announced plans to boost trade and investment with Japan following a meeting with Japan’s Foreign Minister Yoshimasa Hayashi, in Buenos Aires. Fernández tweeted that the two sides were seeking to expand bilateral trade, which totalled US$1.86bn in 2021, and more generally to strengthen the bilateral agenda in “trade, economic and financial issues”, as well as improve coordination in multilateral institutions and cooperation in areas of energy, mining, and science and technology. Argentina’s foreign minister, Santiago Cafiero, who was also present at the meeting, highlighted the importance of bilateral links in “science and technology, aerospace industry, nuclear technology with peaceful aims” as well as highlighting the presence of Japanese carmaker Toyota in Argentina.
