In brief: Peru’s gov’t tallies cost of protests
* Peru’s economy & finance minister, Alex Contreras, has said that the ongoing protests against President Dina Boluarte’s government have generated economic losses of over PEN300m (US$79.2m). Contreras said that the economic impact of the protests will be felt particularly strongly in the southern region of Puno, which is now the epicentre of the unrest, and which he said had the country’s highest poverty rate at 43%. He added that the government remains open to dialogue, and that the energy and mining ministry is discussing a strategy for “the industrialisation of lithium, which is something that Puno is demanding” to help “use the potential that Puno has”.
